BSU and Boston Strong: One Year Later

Tuesday marks the first anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing, an event that deeply touched the region and the BSU community. 

The Tsarnaev brothers allegedly set off two bombs targeting spectators of the city’s annual marathon race on April 15, 2013. The bombs, detonated near the finish line on Boylston Street, killed 3 people and injured an estimated 264 others. In the aftermath, an MIT police officer was killed, as well.

Help Wanted and Found (Multimedia)

News & Events

The spring Job and Internship Fair brought to campus 60 organizations, drawing approximately 400 students. The annual event connects those seeking employment with area companies and organizations with openings.

Job Well Done

At the annual Employee Recognition Luncheon, Keri Powers, associate vice president for human resources, and President Dana Mohler-Faria offered congratulations to the a total of 40 faculty and staff who were recognized for 10 years of service. Meanwhile, 17 faculty and staff were honored for reaching their 20th anniversary at the institution.

In addition, Dr. Mohler-Faria and Ms. Powers presented DRIVE awards to the following people in these categories: 

Study Tour: Iceland (multimedia)

Geology major Erick Dalmolin, '14, recently traveled to Iceland as part of a study tour. The trip was part of a course taught by Dr. Richard Enright, with a focus on the physical environment of Iceland and the ways in which the people of Iceland managed to settle and prosper in a severe environment. 

The eight-day trip took place over spring break. Erick captured some amazing sights in this video. Included are interviews with some of his fellow travelers. 

Mid East Views

Ret. Commodore Abdulateef Al-Muthim of the Royal Saudi Navy, and currently a columnist for Alyaum, a newspaper published in Saudi Arabia, was the featured speaker at the John Quincy Adams Foreign Affairs Distinguished Speaker Series, held in the Heritage Room of the Maxwell Library.

The lecture was sponsored y The Edward W. Minnock Center for International Engagement at Bridgewater and the university’s Center for Middle East Studies.

Scholars Abroad

The annual Shea Scholar Tea was held, giving the award recipients a chance to discuss their projects.

Students selected as Shea Scholars participate with faculty mentors on a focused research or creative project, working together for two to three weeks at one of BSU's partner institutions around the world. This award is named for Dr. Ellen M. Shea, class of 1935, later dean of women and BSU’s first dean of students.

‘Goodwill’ Ambassadors

News & Events

The members of the Afro-American Alumni Association honored three members of the BSU family at the organization’s annual dinner.

Recognized for their contributions to the institution were: Dr. Anna Martin-Jearld of the department of social work; Dr. Carolyn Petrosino of the department of criminal justice; and Dr. Alan Comedy, who retired last summer as assistant to the president for affirmative action, equal opportunity and minority affairs.

Continental Shift

The eighth annual Africa Awareness Week was held, once again exposing members of the BSU community to the stories, music and cultures of the continent.

Dr. Sandra Faiman-Silva, one of the coordinators of the week-long celebration and professor and chairperson of the anthropology department, said she hopes exposure to Africa and its people will move students to want to know and experience more.

Graduate Studies

The College of Graduate Studies will hold an information session Monday, May 5 at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Center for Science & Mathematics, Room 120. Those attending will receive information about Bridgewater State University, the graduate application process and learn about the university's array of graduate programs.
