Storm Cancels BSU Daytime Classes, Activities, Events

winter storm and dangerous driving conditions have resulted in the cancellation of all DAY classes, activities and events at all campuses of Bridgewater State University on Wednesday, January 28.  An update regarding evening classes and events will be available on the university’s weather line at 508.531.1777 by 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28. For more information on university events, please contact the event line at 508.531.1271.

Cape Signing

Leaders from Bridgewater State University, Cape Cod Community College and the community celebrated signing two formal agreements – a memorandum of understanding and an articulation agreement – to offer the first joint undergraduate program on Cape Cod by the two public institutions as well as a series of upper-level programming.

Writing ‘Project’

The Writing Across the Curriculum program hosted a day-long event titled, “Critical Literacies: Writing & Information Literacy.” Featured was guest speaker Michele Van Hoeck from Project Information Literacy (projectinfolit.org), which is a nonprofit that has been conducting ongoing research about early adults and their research habits. In collaboration with the University of Washington, they have gathered data from more than 200 U.S.

Meaningful Role

Dr. Caroline Stanley, assistant professor of psychology, has been named president of the Constructivist Psychology Network, an international, professional organization of psychologists. Constructivist psychology focuses on meaning-making and the process of personal change.

Fall Together

On a sunshine-filled afternoon, students came together in-between classes to celebrate the season at Fall Fest.

Held behind the RCC, the celebration consisted of a photo booth, a pumpkin decorating competition, lawn games, raffle prizes and music from the university’s radio station, WBIM. Apple cider was served and BSU’s mascot Bristaco made an appearance, taking pictures and giving high-fives to students. 

Fired Up

The issues surrounding firearms were the focus of a two-day conference held in the Campus Center ballroom. “Targeting the Truth: About Gun Violence & Gun Control” looked at these issues from several vantage points.

Canadian Investigator

Linden MacIntyre, an award-winning Canadian investigative journalist and novelist, visited campus to present his lecture, "Fiction – A High Road to Truth," as this year’s Distinguished Canadian Address. 

“I'm hopeful that his talk will motivate students at BSU to want to learn more about Canada," said Dr. Andy Holman, director of Canadian Studies, in his opening remarks.

Speaking Up

Dr. Emily M. Douglas, associate professor in the School of Social Work, testified before the National Commission to Eliminate Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities.

She spoke before the 12-member commission in Burlington, Vt., a stop on what commissioners referred to as a “listening tour.”  Their mission is to develop a national strategy and recommendations for reducing fatalities resulting from child abuse and neglect.
