This week BSU is hosting its annual Social Media Awareness Week, featuring a variety of events and activities highlighting the importance of staying connected.

Ed Cabellon, assistant to the vice president of Student Affairs, said this is an important program, and one that’s open to all students and faculty.

Some students love the idea of going away to college but still feel the need to find what they view as a home away from home. A number of these students discover this through membership in a fraternity or sorority.

Recently, many BSU students learned about Greek life during the three-day Panhellenic Association recruitment weekend. The organization welcomed the interest of 81 young women who were hoping to find their place among the university’s four sororities.

Dr. Laura Ramsey, assistant professor of psychology, and a team of colleagues are researching experiences of BSU faculty in STEM and social science departments. Specifically, this project, which is funded by a National Science Foundation ADVANCE Program grant, seeks to uncover any barriers to faculty success.

Valor on Display

John MacLellan, ’88, the Watertown police sergeant who was involved in the April 18, 2013 shootout with the alleged Boston Marathon bombers, has been awarded the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor.

The medal was presented at a White House Ceremony by Vice President Joseph Biden and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder. Sgt. MacLellan was among five Watertown police officers and two firefighters honored for their part in taking down the suspected Boston Bombers.

Female politicians are in the news more than ever these days, from U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren to expected presidential candidate Hilary Clinton.

Dr. Brian Frederick, associate professor of political science, has long studied the role of women in our political system and recently he addressed the topic as part of BSU’s Center for Legislative Studies Distinguished Speaker Series.

Nearly 300 members of the extended BSU community gathered to pay tribute to the man President Dana Mohler-Faria introduced as “the longest-serving trustee on a pubic college campus in the history of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.”

Administrator publishes paper on best practices in undergraduate research

An article written by Dr. Jenny Shanahan, director of Undergraduate Research, has been accepted for publication in the CUR Quarterly, which is published by the Council on Undergraduate Research.

The article, “Research-Informed Practice, Practice-Informed Research: The Integral Role of Undergraduate Research in Professional Disciplines” will appear in the journal’s summer issue.
