The annual Metro South Legislative Luncheon brought to campus several state and regional leaders to discuss recent developments.

Bill Morse, chairman of the board opened the event by sharing a new slogan he said summed up the afternoon’s significance, and he hoped everyone would adopt, “When Metro South is home everything’s within reach.”

BSU President Dana Mohler-Faria echoed that sentiment with his opening remarks.

Into Focus

Dr. Bjorn Ingvoldstad, associate professor of communication studies, has been awarded a 2014-2015 Fulbright U.S. scholar grant that will fund a trip to Lithuania. He will spend the spring semester teaching courses on cinema and media studies at Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, Lithuania's second-largest city. 

Passover Celebrated

This year’s annual campus celebration of Passover was held in the wake of a horrific crime. Three people were murdered at Jewish centers in the Kansas city area, allegedly by a man with a long history of anti-Semitic behavior.

This made the event, held in Council Chambers in the RCC to commemorate the coming out of bondage for Jews around the world, especially powerful. The event was marked by education, a sense of community and the breaking of bread.

The anthropology department held its ninth annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, featuring five student presentations and the presentation of the Horner Awards.

The presenters and their topics were:

The second installment of BSU’s Visiting Author Series brought to campus Dinaw Mengestu, whose latest novel, All Our Names is one of the notable books of the year. The award-winning novelist and journalist spent the afternoon discussing the craft of writing fiction and later signing books.

Mr. Mengestu is the recipient of the National Book Foundation’s 5 Under 35 award, The New Yorker’s 20 Under 40 award, and a 2012 MacArthur Foundation genius grant winner.

The RCC ballroom was filled with honorees and special guests for this year’s Awards for Academic Excellence ceremony. The eight awards “all recognize high achievement,” President Dana Mohler-Faria said in his welcoming remarks.

Mike Verlezza, '13, has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student Award, which will allow him to comparative research in Canada on veterans’ healthcare.

The Attleboro resident, who was an economics and finance major at BSU, said he’s excited to join the esteemed company of current and previous Fulbright awardees.

Time for Mother Earth

It's Earth Week, and members of the BSU community are doing their part. Kicking things off was a general cleanup around campus. Other days will feature presentations on sustainability.

Veterans’ Healthcare

The Canadian Studies Program’s 4th Annual Spring Symposium focused on the timely issue of military veterans' health issues in Canada and the United States. 

The event featured two panel discussions, one concerning current research on veterans' health matters, the second dealt with advocacy efforts with veterans' health matter. The latter featured BSU’s own Dr. Victoria Bacon, a professor in the counselor education department and an expert on women veterans' experience.
