Cultivating World Citizenship

The Center for Middle East Studies will present a lecture "St. Augustine to the Enlightenment: Islam's Role in Cultivating World Citizenship and Human Unity" on Tuesday, March 5 starting at 12:30 in Maxwell Library's Heritage Room. Dr. Robert Sylvester, assistant professor of elementary and early childhood education at Bridgewater, is the speaker. The event is open to the public and the campus community.

The Center for Middle East Studies will present a lecture "Education Under Fire: The Iranian Baha'is" on Wednesday, March 27 starting at 12:20 in Maxwell Library's Heritage Room. Dr. Robert Sylvester, assistant professor of elementary and early childhood education at Bridgewater, is the speaker. The event, which is open to the public and the campus community, is part of Middle East Educational Week at the university.

Anthropology Professor Diana Fox has long studied and written on environmental and gender issues in Trinidad. Soon, her work will be featured in a film that will share the story of a remarkable woman who made a difference in her community and beyond.
 

Back to the Hill

Posters on the Hill, the most prestigious undergraduate research event in the country has honored two BSU students.
 
Presenting her research at the annual event will be Brianne Molloy, who graduated last month with a major in psychology, was mentored by Dr. Elizabeth Spievak, associate professor of psychology, on her research into cognitive biases about environmental risks.
 

Professor, Grad Student Present Research in Fla.

Dr. Bennie Agbarha, associate professor of educational leadership, and Catherine Marshall, a graduate student in the same discipline, presented at the 36th annual Conference of the Eastern Educational Research Association the results of their research. The presentation was titled, "The Adoption of Electronic Folio in Teacher Education Programs: Benefits and Challenges." The conference was held in Sarasota, Fla.

Lecture on Turkish Art Held

Professor Henry Glassie of Indiana University-Bloomington delivered a lecture, “Tradition and Creativity in Turkey Today.” The event was held in the Conant Auditorium and featured an informative PowerPoint presentation. Professor Yasar Ozan Say served as moderator, and BSU’s Dr. Jabbar Al-Obaidi offered welcoming remarks.

The distinguished lecture was sponsored by the Anthropology Department and the Center for Middle East Studies.

Alumna earns industry honor

Heather Murphy, ’06, revenue manager for Red Jacket Resorts, has been awarded the 2013 Stevan Porter Emerging Hospitality Leader of the Year Award by the Massachusetts Lodging Association. The honor was bestowed at the association’s annual meeting in Boston.

Faculty member’s ‘art book’ exhibited

Margaret Bellafiore, a visiting lecturer in the Art Department, is exhibiting her artist book, "First Aid," at the San Francisco Center for the Book, as part of Al Mutanabbi Street Starts Here project. The exhibition runs through May 11. The project is an international response of book artists to the bombing of the street of booksellers in Baghdad in 2007. More information is at sfcb.org.
