'Locker Room' Opening

News & Events

"Locker Room" is the work of Nathan Vincent, who explores gender permissions and the challenges that arise from straying from prescribed norms. The exhibition, which opens Sept. 3 in the Wallace L. Anderson Gallery at Bridgewater State University, questions the qualities of gender by considering what constitutes masculine and feminine. It critiques stereotypical gender mediums by creating "masculine objects" using "feminine processes" such as crochet, sewing and applique.

'Clipped Wings' Exhibition

News & Events

The Maxwell Library will open Emmanuel Jose's "Clipped Wings" Exhibition on Tuesday, Sept. 3. Jose decided to use his longtime fascination with playing cards to set a personal challenge: create a single giant paper-cut card each week. This challenge was done using traditional paper-cutting techniques and transformed the suites and pips of a standard deck into an imaginative display of our favorite birds. Cockatoos, pelicans and songbirds each have been rendered into the Jack of Clubs, the Three of Spades and the Two of Diamonds.

Repousse Work Featured

News & Events

Works of Linda Kindler Priest will be on display in Maxwell Library's Rare Book Room on the third floor from Sept. 3 through Oct. 31. "Linda Kindler Priest - Repousse Sculpture, Drawings and Sketches" are based on nature and meant to be worn. Each sculpture is a critical observation on our environment and to our relationship with the living world. They are developed by carefully combining imagery, textures, shapes, colors and chased surfaces, which are then finished with the selection and setting of precious stones and crystals.

A Rich Mix

News & Events

The Office of Institutional Diversity hosted “Leading for Change: Diversity Practices in Higher Education”, a conference that brought together more than 200 educators from Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire to discuss best practices and share ideas on a wide-range of topics.

The conference focused on BSU’s diversity-oriented policies and allowed participants the chance to examine their own institutional diversity practices. The ultimate goal of the two-day conference was for each educator to contribute to the creation of a campus diversity action plan.

Male Call

News & Events

“Locker Room,” a sculpture by Nathan Vincent, will be exhibited at the Anderson Gallery from Sept. 3 through Oct. 10. The installation depicts a men’s locker room and is created through knitting and crocheting.

“The ‘Locker Room’ portrays ideas of gender and gender permission,” Mr. Vincent said, adding that it is a place where males feel both comfort and vulnerability. Mixing the materials, considered by most to be feminine, with the creation of a place that is most often viewed as highly masculine, the artist questions traditional notions of gender.

The Dean is In

News & Events

Dr. Karim Ismaili is the new dean of the College of Graduate Studies.
The London native last served as associate dean for graduate affairs and research in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Kennesaw State University, and said there were several reasons that brought him to BSU.
