Many teenagers would prefer to spend their school vacation sleeping in, but on Feb. 20 a group from the Brockton Boys and Girls Club ventured to the campus of BSU to enjoy a morning of personal development.

In partnership with Junior Achievement, BSU presented Skills to Achieve, a collection of lessons on workforce readiness, marketing, and personal finance. 

Diana Jennings, director of the Office of Regional Outreach, said the goals of Junior Achievement mesh well with the university’s mission.

Summers Abroad

The Office of Undergraduate Research Abroad has announced it will fund two summer research projects.

Dr. Diana Fox, professor of anthropology, and students Zelmia Harvey, Alexandra Pivero, Michaela Santos, and McKayla Hoffman, will travel to Jamaica where they will conduct archaeological and ethnographic research for their project titled, “What is Jamaican Cultural Heritage Tourism? A Critical, Applied Inquiry”

Six students attended the second inauguration of President Barack Obama. These students were chosen to be a part of a two-week program hosted by The Washington Center, which brought together 400 students from 46 schools around the country. They participated in a series of discussions, site visits, guest lectures, as well as inauguration events and the ceremony itself.

The annual Class of 1942 lecture series, sponsored in cooperation with the Department of Mathematics, was held in the auditorium of the new Science and Mathematics Center. More than 100 faculty members, students, alumni and emerti faculty were on hand for a lecture on “Chaos and Fractals,” delivered by Dr. Robert Devaney of Boston University.

Warm Send Off

A frigid week of winter weather and a threat of flurries couldn’t dampen the spirits of the approximately 800 students who received their degrees Friday night during the university’s 26th annual Winter Commencement Convocation.

The Rondileau Campus Center Auditorium was filled to capacity for the two-hour-plus ceremony.

BSU President Dana Mohler-Faria in his address reminded the graduates how lucky they are but that this good fortune comes with a price.

Another Record for NCUR

Nearly 70 students will be heading to this year’s National Conference on Undergraduate Research, representing a full 96 percent of those who submitted abstracts to the prestigious conference.

Both of those numbers are records for BSU.

The conference will be held April 11-13 at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Seventy one BSU students applied this year and 67 were accepted. The 96-percent rate compares favorably with the national average of 80 percent.

MLK Day of Service (slideshow)

More than 200 members of the Bridgewater State University community and area residents spent the 2013 MLK holiday volunteering across the region. The volunteer work took place at these locations: Jumpstart Bridgewater-on campus, Father Bill's Distribution Center-Brockton, Cradles to Crayons-Boston, VA Hospital-Brockton, Girls, Inc.-Taunton, Bridgewater Nursing Home and Gifts to Give-New Bedford. The Day of Service was captured in these photos, which were taken by Diane Bell, Tony Esposito, Karen Callan and Kenny Monteiro.

The spirit of Martin Luther King Jr. is alive and well as exemplified by more than 200 members of the university community and area residents who spent the holiday volunteering at several locations.

(Dr. King) “was about many things and at the center of those things was service to humanity,” said President Dana Mohler-Faria at a kickoff breakfast held in the East Campus Commons.

Japan Friendship Concert

Honoring the legacy of Shuji Isawa, Bridgewater State University will present the "Japan Friendship Concert," Monday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m. in Boyden Hall's Horace Mann Auditorium. Isawa, an early graduate of Bridgewater (1877), went on to become the father of public education in his native Japan. Performing at the concert is: The Boston Chamber Orchestra conducted by Yohei Sato; guest pianists Manabu Takasawa and Makoto Takenaka; faculty pianist Dr. Deborah Nemko; Trio Fiero featuring Miguel Perez-Espejo on violin, Guy Fishman on cello and Dr.
