Guest Pianist in Concert

The Department of Music at Bridgewater State University presents Lilit Karapetian-Shougarian in concert on Tuesday, March 5 in Boyden Hall's Horace Mann Auditorium. She has performed extensively in her native Armenia and the former Soviet Union as well as internationally. Her solo appearances and recent contributions to a number of ensembles have won acclaim from renowned authorities in the musical world, including praise from Paul Badura Skoda, Mikhail Pletnev and Daniel Pollock. The concert begins at 8 p.m.

CPDC Lecture Program

Marie Trottier, former disability coordinator for Harvard University, will deliver a presentation "From Where I Stand: Work and Lifestyle Opportunities for Individuals with Disabilities in This New Century" on Saturday, March 2 from 8 to 9 a.m. in the Center for Science & Mathematics at Bridgewater State University. Her talk is part of a yearlong lecture series presented by the Children's Physical Developmental Clinic (CBDC) at Bridgewater. The series presents a number of topics relating to the care, treatment, rehabilitation and education of children with disabilities.

Canadian Film Series

The Canadian Studies Program presents "Force of Nature: The David Suzuki Movie" on Thursday, Feb. 28 from 4 to 6 p.m. in Maxwell Library's Heritage Room. A scientist, educator, broadcaster and activist, Suzuki shares his autobiography of ideas articulating his core, urgent message: "we have exhausted the limits of the biosphere and it is imperative that we re-think our relationship with the natural world." He offers a positive blueprint for sustainability and survival.

The Center for Entrepreneurship Studies at Bridgewater State University is hosting "Social Media for Business" on Wednesday, Feb. 27 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The event, held in Maxwell Library's Heritage Room, is open to the general public as well as members of the campus community. Those attending will learn how to use search engine optimization (SEO) in combination with keyword-driven content, engagement in social network communities such as LinkedIN, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, Foursquare, as well as monitoring growth through the use of Web analytics.

Financials for Business

A presenter from the Massachusetts Small Business Development Center will lead the discussion "Financials for Your Business" on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at Bridgewater State University. The Center for Entrepreneurship Students at Bridgewater is hosting Melinda Ailes who will present business statements suitable for a business plan. She will describe the differences between various small business funding sources and how those sources review financial statements. The event will be held in Maxwell Library's Heritage Room from 6 to 8 p.m.

As an intern with Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign, the graduate student learned much about our political process and along the way may have discovered her life’s passion.

Years ago, BSU had a thriving Earth Sciences Club that had many members and even attracted the attention of local corporations looking to hire new graduates in the field. Unfortunately, it was abandoned.
 

Developing Minds

Many teenagers would prefer to spend their school vacation sleeping in, but on Feb. 20 a group from the Brockton Boys and Girls Club ventured to the campus of BSU to enjoy a morning of personal development.

In partnership with Junior Achievement, BSU presented Skills to Achieve, a collection of lessons on workforce readiness, marketing, and personal finance. 

Diana Jennings, director of the Office of Regional Outreach, said the goals of Junior Achievement mesh well with the university’s mission.

Summers Abroad

The Office of Undergraduate Research Abroad has announced it will fund two summer research projects.

Dr. Diana Fox, professor of anthropology, and students Zelmia Harvey, Alexandra Pivero, Michaela Santos, and McKayla Hoffman, will travel to Jamaica where they will conduct archaeological and ethnographic research for their project titled, “What is Jamaican Cultural Heritage Tourism? A Critical, Applied Inquiry”

Six students attended the second inauguration of President Barack Obama. These students were chosen to be a part of a two-week program hosted by The Washington Center, which brought together 400 students from 46 schools around the country. They participated in a series of discussions, site visits, guest lectures, as well as inauguration events and the ceremony itself.
