International Tour

Professor Debora Nemko (music) will perform in the Netherlands four times over winter break. The pianist, a regular on international stages, will perform two chamber music concerts, on Jan. 12 and 13, a benefit concert in Voorborg, and will cap the short tour with a New Year’s Eve performance in de Hoekseen with Soprano Julia Bronkhorst and Friends.

Leadership Honored

Dr. Catherine Holbrook, associate vice president of student affairs, was honored by the National Association of Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education with the Institutional Leadership Award. The honor is given annually in recognition of a professional who has contributed significantly to the growth and development of his/her home institution in the areas of programs, policies, staff or student development. The award covers the organization’s New England region, and was given to Dr. Holbrook at a conference held in Mystic, Conn.

Steroid Paper Published

Professor James E. Leone (Movement Arts, Health Promotion and Leisure Studies) is the coauthor of a major position statement on androgenic-anabolic steroids. Published in the Sept. 2012 Journal of Athletic Training the article seeks to inform athletic trainers and medical professionals about the dangers of steroid use. “The National Athletic Trainers’ Association Position Statement: Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids” was coauthored by Drs.Robert D. Kersey, Diane L. Elliot, Linn Goldberg, Gen Kanayama, Mike Pavlovich and Harrison G. Pope Jr.

Dr. Richard Enright of the Department of Geological Sciences and students Eric Croll and Timothy Kiesel attended the Annual Meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) held in San Francisco, where the students presented research they conducted under Dr. Enright’s mentorship.

“This is the first time a BSU professor has ever mentored two students whose work was accepted for the same prestigious American Geophysical Union meeting,” said Dr. Enright. “They did an admirable job both during the summer and at the meeting.

Images of Rockport

Professor Ivana George of the Art Department took her Photo 2 class to Rockport for a day of shooting with large-format cameras. Inspired by a stop along the way to the Peabody Museum and the Ansel Adams exhibition, “At the Water’s Edge,” the students set out to create their own black-and-white images of the Massachusetts coastline.

Spotlight on Undergraduate Research

More than 500 students participated in the Mid-Year Symposium, a showcase of student research and creative work from 100- and 200-level courses, which was held in the campus center ballroom.

“This is a celebration of early undergraduate scholarship and creative work and it’s great to see the diversity of disciplines that are represented,” said Dr. Jenny Shanahan, director of the Office of Undergraduate Research, which sponsors the program.

Kevin Burns, vice president of lending at Bridgewater Credit Union, delivers a talk on the ins and outs of credit, including establishing good credit, contributing factors of rising scores, and building credit from scratch.

The event, held in the Science and Mathematics Center, was co-sponsored by BSU, the Department of Economics and the BCU. Dean Marian Extejt, Ricciardi College of Business, delivered the introduction. This year, BCU donated $10,000 to fund the BSU Financial Literacy and Giving (FLAG) project. 


Q and A: Jim Gouzias on Unique Capstone Project

When Jim Gouzias, a senior and army veteran, was assigned a capstone project for his Issues of Diversity and Oppression course, he decided to organize something memorable. He led 30 classmates and teachers on an hour-long trek around campus in a simulation of the tumultuous journey immigrants take trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border. In the army, Mr. Gouzias served a few short stints at the border from 2005-2007.
