Grad student presents MSW research

Patricia J Serino, who is enrolled in the master's of social work program, recently presented her research poster, "Client-Centered Care Planning," at BSU’s Graduate Research Symposium, the Massachusetts Gerontology Association's annual meeting, and at the National Research on Child and Family Practice and Policy conference, also held at BSU, which Ms. Serino also helped plan and organize. At the Mass Gerontology Meeting (which was themed "The Invisible Faces of Ageism"), the Woburn resident earned for her work one of the event’s top prizes.

Professor publishes paper on hockey

The Spanish language journal of international history, ISTOR, translated and published an article about the history of hockey by Professor Andrew Holman. Dr. Holman is a respected authority on the subject, as well as director of BSU's Canadian Studies Program, and his article, "Una bandera de tendones: el hockey sobre heilo y la historia de Canada," is featured in the journal's spring 2012 issue.

Time for Reflection

Eid al-fitr, a celebration held throughout the world to observe the end of Ramadan, the month-long fasting that takes place annually among followers of Islam, was held last night in the Dunn Conference Center.

"Ramadan is a time for spiritual reflection as well as fasting among Muslims," said Dr. Jabbar Al-Obaidi, professor of communication studies and director of the university's Center for Middle East Studies, in opening the program.

In a recent panel discussion, student veterans recounted their military experience and its effect on their lives and families.

Substance Abuse Discussion

The Bridgewater Coalition Against Community Violence is sponsoring "Substance Abuse: It's Closer Than You Think," on Thursday, Oct. 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Dunn Conference Suite at Bridgewater State University's East  Hall. Topics include current drug abuse statistics, trends, recognizing symptoms, legal information, testimony from an individual in long-term recovery, and where to get help. Light refreshments will be served at this event which is open to the public as well as students, faculty and staff at the university.

Before resuming teaching and scholarship this fall, more than 60 faculty members from all disciplines participated in a week of workshops on best teaching practices and scholarly writing at BSU's annual Teacher-Scholar Summer Institute.

The Office of Student Involvement and Leadership hosted its annual Welcome Week last week, where incoming students are introduced to their new school via entertaining activities held across campus.

Highlights of the week included hypnotist-comedian Harold J. Hemberger, art and cultural events, an Opening Day BBQ, and laser tag and trivia games. Freshmen also had the opportunity to pose for a class photo on Swenson Field.

Scanning the Past

History lives again in a digital form thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Maxwell Library and the Boston Public Library.

A federal grant has allowed the BPL to offer its extensive scanning services to qualified institutions across the state. BSU applied to take part, citing the need to scan the institution's yearbooks.

The BPL committed to scanning 15,000 pages.
