Before they walked across the commencement stage to receive their bachelor's degrees, a number of undergraduates were honored with traditional Kente Cloths for their outstanding academic achievements and demonstrating strong leadership.

"This day embodies my journey through college," said [b]William Medero[/b], one of the Kente Cloth recipients. "It's me celebrating everything I've been through to get here today. It's like a rite of passage into the real world."

Cross Country Grad

Forced to move temporarily across country and finish his Master's of Public Administration degree online due to a health condition, Dennis resident [b]Andrew Whipple[/b] had no hope of attending his own commencement ceremony at BSU. So, the university helped bring commencement to the graduate.

Friends had organized a party for Mr. Whipple in his temporary Chino Valley, Ariz., community, where he donned the cap and gown sent to him by the BSU bookstore. It was then that friend Kathy Griffin brought in a surprise package: personalized gifts sent from BSU faculty and staff.

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the gifting of cherry blossom trees that sit along the Potomac in Washington, D.C., the Consul General of Japan to Boston Takeshi Hikihara presented a cherry blossom tree to BSU.

The consul general was accompanied by his wife, Hammi, and Vice Consul Mika Iga, for the gift-giving ceremony held on the Boyden Hall garden.

President [b]Dana Mohler-Faria[/b] accepted the cherry blossom ("sakura" in Japanese) on behalf of the university, saying it was a distinct honor to celebrate the event with his Japanese guests.

Numbers Game

MassMATE (Massachusetts Mathematics Association of Teacher Educators) held its sixth annual conference at BSU, where more than 250 math education leaders from across the commonwealth learned about engaging students in math under the new Common Core State Standards.

The common standards initiative is a state-led effort that provides a consistent framework for teachers to prepare children for college and the workforce. Massachusetts joined 46 other U.S. states and territories in adopting the common standards in 2010.

The fifth annual Graduate Student Research Symposium held in the campus center's large ballroom featured poster projects and presentations detailing the work of more than 80 students from all BSU's graduate programs.

"This is a time for our graduate students to showcase their research interests and the scholarly projects they've been working on during their time at BSU," said [b]Dr. William Smith[/b], dean of the College of Graduate Studies. "It's a wonderful opportunity for them to talk to their peers, with faculty members and with other scholars."

MADD Massachusetts recently honored the Bridgewater State University Police Department for its commitment to enforcing drunk driving laws and keeping local roads safe.

The department as a whole was honored for actively engaging in high-profile DUI and underage drinking enforcement, demonstrating strong traffic enforcement with measureable results and engaging in safety belt and sobriety checkpoint enforcement. MADD Massachusetts officials said the BSU police department has developed a statewide reputation for effective DUI and underage drinking enforcement.

Thinking Green

The Center for Sustainability held its annual Earth Week, which included a long list of fun and informative events across campus, each taking a different approach to food and water sustainability practices.

Co-organizer [b]Dr. Deniz Leuenberger[/b], associate professor of political science, said a primary purpose of Earth Week is to spread awareness about BSU's numerous green initiatives that take place throughout the year on campus, including recycling projects, lectures and other programming.

Annual CARS Celebration Held

The 16th annual Center for the Advancement of Research and Scholarship (CARS) celebration held in the Moakley Center included more than 50 presentations and panel discussions that focused on top faculty and librarian research, creative endeavors and other modes of scholarship.

Opening remarks for the ceremony were provided by President [b]Dana Mohler-Faria[/b] and [b]Dr. Howard London[/b], provost and vice president for academic affairs. They praised both the faculty and the event for its focus on teaching issues and professional development.

[b]James Oliveira[/b] of New Bedford still can't believe it's over. "It's a big sigh of relief, though I still wake up and say 'what's due today?'" the athletic training major said, as he waited to take his place in the line of graduates about to participate in Bridgewater State University's 171st spring commencement ceremony. "It hasn't sunk in yet." Mr. Oliveira was one of roughly 1,100 students who graduated Saturday morning under beautiful, sunny skies.
