Taking students and guests on a tour of the music's travels and travails was self-proclaimed "blues addict" Cleveland Kurtz, who visited campus to deliver a lecture in the library's Heritage Room titled, "Folklore and Folk Music in the American South."

In response to Lt. Gov. Tim Murray's recently-announced "WOW Initiative" to promote STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) across Massachusetts, BSU teamed with local organizations for an event introducing local high school students to a wide range of career opportunities in STEM.

The Music Department hosted the 2012 High School Honor Band Festival, bringing to the campus center auditorium stage a half dozen bands.

Students participated in rehearsals throughout the day with Dr. Donald Running, director of bands at BSU, along with guest clinician Timothy Robblee. Mr. Robblee is a gifted conductor of band music hailing from Northwestern University.

Learning on the Reservation

As part of the President's Distinguished Speaker Series, Valentina Merdanian, director of institutional relations at Red Cloud Indian School in South Dakota, spoke on campus about her school and issues surrounding Native American reservations, such as poverty.

A member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, Ms. Merdanian is a lifelong resident of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, an impoverished two million acres of land where her school is located.

Students in a comparative anatomy class taught by Dr. John Jahoda, professor of biology, had the opportunity to perform dissections and necropsies (autopsies) on sea turtles that were part of the recent stranding on Cape Cod.

"Cape Cod acts as a natural trap and some percentage of sea turtles that come here during the summer months fail to find their way south around the Cape and end up being cold stunned as the water cools in the fall and summer," said Dr. Jahoda.

Social work student Diana DeMont ranks among the select number of undergraduates chosen nationwide to present at this year's Council for Undergraduate Research (CUR) Posters on the Hill event in Washington, D.C.

"I am pleasantly surprised and very honored," said Ms. DeMont of West Springfield, who will head to the Capitol April 23-24 for the event.

RecycleMania Underway

For the fifth consecutive year, BSU's recycling program is participating in RecycleMania, an annual waste-minimization competition held over eight weeks across the United States and Canada. In previous years, BSU has earned first-place titles in the contest.

From Feb. 5 until April 6, BSU will join nearly 30 colleges and universities from Massachusetts, and more than 600 nationwide, in reporting the amount of recycling and trash collected on their campuses each week.

The campus community rallied for one of its own five days after a reported assault on a Comment writer who'd written an editorial in favor of gay marriage.

Hundreds of students, faculty, staff and administrators crowded the quadrangle in front of Boyden Hall for a lengthy rally that was also attended by members of the institution's cabinet.

President Dana Mohler-Faria welcomed seven state lawmakers to a legislative breakfast held in the Dunn Conference Center to apprise them of recent developments and future plans at the institution.
