Eight students traveled to Guatemala over spring break, bringing with them a large cache of useful items for local residents.

Mother Africa

News & Events

African Women will be the focus of the fifth annual Africa Awareness Week, to be held on campus beginning Monday.

This year's schedule features nearly five full days and nights of activities, including lectures, music and dance performances, an extensive film series, student panel discussions, African food, demonstrations and a lesson on speaking Swahili.

Rebuilding Brockton (Multimedia)

As a distinguished speaker for the Center for Legislative Studies, Brockton Mayor Linda Balzotti spoke on campus about the initiatives her office is undertaking to revitalize the city's downtown and other areas.

Renewal projects include new construction on the Enterprise block, the revival of Main Street, various infrastructural developments, building renovations and smart-growth planning in downtown and the Campello section of the city.

Performance Artist

The work of Margaret Bellafiore, a visiting lecturer in the Art Department, will be featured in a solo exhibit, "Drawings from Performance," held at Boston's Mobius gallery through March 25.

The drawings were done over the course of the past three years as part of a monthly series Professor Bellafiore sponsors at Mobius, where the general public is invited in for "marathon" drawing sessions lasting five hours each.

The blues has a long history in the United States, one that stretches from the plantation fields to Carnegie Hall and beyond. Taking students and guests on a tour of the music's travels and travails was self-proclaimed "blues addict" Cleveland Kurtz, who visited campus to deliver a lecture in the library's Heritage Room titled, "Folklore and Folk Music in the American South."

In response to Lt. Gov. Tim Murray's recently-announced "WOW Initiative" to promote STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) across Massachusetts, BSU teamed with local organizations for an event introducing local high school students to a wide range of career opportunities in STEM.

Play On

The Music Department hosted the 2012 High School Honor Band Festival, bringing to the campus center auditorium stage a half dozen bands.

Students participated in rehearsals throughout the day with Dr. Donald Running, director of bands at BSU, along with guest clinician Timothy Robblee. Mr. Robblee is a gifted conductor of band music hailing from Northwestern University.

Learning on the Reservation

As part of the President's Distinguished Speaker Series, Valentina Merdanian, director of institutional relations at Red Cloud Indian School in South Dakota, spoke on campus about her school and issues surrounding Native American reservations, such as poverty.

A member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, Ms. Merdanian is a lifelong resident of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, an impoverished two million acres of land where her school is located.

Students in a comparative anatomy class taught by Dr. John Jahoda, professor of biology, had the opportunity to perform dissections and necropsies (autopsies) on sea turtles that were part of the recent stranding on Cape Cod.

"Cape Cod acts as a natural trap and some percentage of sea turtles that come here during the summer months fail to find their way south around the Cape and end up being cold stunned as the water cools in the fall and summer," said Dr. Jahoda.
