[b]President Dana Mohler-Faria[/b]'s Task Force to End Homelessness held its fifth annual Spring Forum, focused on "Mental Illness, Social Policy, and Transformation," which brought key advocates for fighting homelessness to campus.[br][br]Keynote speaker was [b]Julie Salamon[/b], an activist and prolific author who is chair of the board for Bowery Residents' Committee, an organization that provides care for people suffering from homelessness, addiction and mental illness in New York City.

The Afro-American Alumni Association hosted its annual dinner bringing to campus more than 65 guests. The association's vice president, [b]Nanette Baines[/b], G'04, provided welcoming remarks, kicking off an evening of sharing, dining and dancing, as well as reconnecting.[br][br]Students [b]Joshua and Earl Cenat[/b], along with [b]Natara Gray[/b] from the Office of Multicultural Affairs, led the attendees in "Lift Every Voice."[br][br]This year's honorees included [b]Dr. David Ostroth[/b], outgoing vice president of student affairs, for his years of service to the university.

Student named one of '29 Who Shine'

[b]Diana Ramos[/b], '12, an honors student involved in numerous social justice and human rights organizations on-and off-campus, was named by the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education to the prestigious "29 Who Shine" list.[br][br]The list is comprised of outstanding students representing each of the 29 public higher education institutions in Massachusetts. The honorees are chosen based on their academic achievements and record of student leadership and community service.

Nearly 400 members of the campus community filled the Campus Center ballroom to hear [b]Elizabeth Warren[/b], the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, and former Secretary of State [b]Madeleine Albright[/b] discuss their views on a wide range of topics.[br][br]The program began with [b]President Dana Mohler-Faria[/b] posing questions to the two guests. Following that, a half dozen BSU students got a chance to pose their own questions.[br][br]Dr. Warren is a professor at Harvard Law School and would have been happy to continue a life of teaching and research, she said.

Tsongas Scholarship Recipients Honored

Recipients of this year's Paul E. Tsongas scholarship, including a number of BSU students, were honored during a ceremony held in the Great Hall of Flags of the Massachusetts Statehouse.[br][br]As part of a program founded in 1998 in memory of U.S. Sen. [b]Paul E. Tsongas[/b], Massachusetts, who died in 1997, the nine state universities each year award a number of scholarships to top high school graduates in the commonwealth. These scholarships cover all tuition costs and mandatory fees at the institutions.

Day of Dialogue (Multimedia)

The Office of Institutional Diversity hosted its annual Day of Dialogue, where campus community members joined in group discussions and workshops centered on issues of race, gender and social justice. [br][br]Organizer [b]Sabrina Gentlewarror[/b] said the day-long event, subtitled, "Race and Gender: Making Connections," aimed to raise awareness about racism and gender bias and explore avenues for creating equality on campus and beyond. [br][br]"BSU has a long commitment to diversity and social justice issues," she said.

Africa Awareness Week Held (Multimedia)

The world's second most populous continent was the topic at BSU last week, as the institution sponsored its fifth annual Africa Awareness Week. The schedule featured nearly five full days and nights of activities, including music and dance performances, extensive film viewings, student panel discussions, African food, and lessons on speaking Swahili. [br][br]The theme of this year's programming was African women. Many of the events addressed the often underestimated contributions of African women in their societies, said Assistant Professor of Anthropology [b]Dr.

The Middle East, from all sides

Beginning Wednesday, the Center for Middle East Studies will sponsor the third annual Middle East Educational Week, featuring a comprehensive and eclectic program of lectures and events investigating a variety of topics currently making news in the region. [br][br]Lectures and discussions will take up issues such as the current situation in Kurdistan, the Middle East in the media, the effects of social media in the region, relations between Turkey and Iraq, and the Iranian nuclear threat.
