RecycleMania Underway

For the fifth consecutive year, BSU's recycling program is participating in RecycleMania, an annual waste-minimization competition held over eight weeks across the United States and Canada. In previous years, BSU has earned first-place titles in the contest.[br][br]From Feb. 5 until April 6, BSU will join nearly 30 colleges and universities from Massachusetts, and more than 600 nationwide, in reporting the amount of recycling and trash collected on their campuses each week. [br][br]At the end of the competition, the institutions will be ranked in various categories.

Check out this recent event via BSU podcast:[br][br][b]Dr. Michael Sutcliffe[/b], former municipal manager of Durban, South Africa, delivers his talk, "The geographies of transformation in a democratic South Africa," in the Science and Math Center auditorium. [br][br]A leading geographer in South Africa, Dr. Sutcliffe, who was actively involved in the struggle against apartheid, chaired the post-apartheid demarcation project that redefined municipal and provincial regions, substantially changing the politics in his country toward a more democratic system.

The campus community rallied for one of its own five days after a reported assault on a [i]Comment[/i] writer who'd written an editorial in favor of gay marriage.[br][br]Hundreds of students, faculty, staff and administrators crowded the quadrangle in front of Boyden Hall for a lengthy rally that was also attended by members of the institution's cabinet. [br][br]"We come together to confront ignorance, violence, hatred and all that constitutes injustice on our campus and in our world," said opening speaker President [b]Dana Mohler-Faria[/b].

President [b]Dana Mohler-Faria[/b] welcomed seven state lawmakers to a legislative breakfast held in the Dunn Conference Center to apprise them of recent developments and future plans at the institution.[br][br]"This morning I'd like to share with you a progress report about this university, and I want to express to you, on behalf of all of us at Bridgewater, our gratitude to you in the legislature and to the other leaders at the state level who've had the faith and confidence to continue to support us, to allow us to grow and develop, by providing the resources we need," he said.[br

"Race, Gender and Popular Culture" was the theme of an informative dialogue session held in the Rondileau Campus Center, where more than 120 students, faculty and administrators gathered to deliberate on that topic and others. [br][br]The one-hour discussion, part of the Power and Privilege Dialogue Series organized by the Office of Institutional Diversity and the Diversity Inclusion Resource Institute, was lead by [b]Dr. Joyce Rain Anderson[/b], of the OID and [b]Dr. Arthur Lizie[/b], chair of communication studies.

Strong start, bright future

More than 200 first-year students were honored at the New Student Dean's List Ceremony in the Rondileau Campus Center auditorium, where administrators praised the students' early academic achievement as the first step toward a bright future.[br][br]"You students are all on a path to excellence and personal success," said [b]Fred Clark[/b], executive vice president and vice president for external affairs, in his welcoming remarks.

Tech Games

Robots took over the Adrian Tinsley Center at Bridgewater State University on Saturday, when BSU hosted the FIRST Tech Challenge regional qualifier. The challenge pitted 24 high school teams in a robotics competition for a shot at the Massachusetts championship tournament.[br][br]FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), is a non-profit organization that encourages young students to pursue STEM education programs (science, engineering, technology and math) by offering mentorships, scholarships and other initiatives.

Trip strengthens ties in China

Three BSU delegates made a trip to China, where they strengthened ties and developed several new exchange programs with BSU's partner institutions in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.[br][br]The delegates were [b]Dr. Mike Kryzanek[/b], director of global studies and executive director of international engagement, [b]Dr. Howard London[/b], provost and vice president for academic affairs, and [b]Dr. Wing-Kai To[/b], professor of history and coordinator of Asian Studies.

10,000 and climbing

Just three years after launching in-house flight operations, BSU Aviation has logged its 10,000th hour of accident-free flight instruction. [br] [br]BSU Aviation's Chief Instructor [b]Loren Herren[/b] credits the flight instructors, students, maintenance and administrative support staff, faculty, airport personnel, and FAA representatives for making such an achievement possible. [br] [br]"We got to this point one flight at a time by always keeping our eye on the main thing, which is safe, fun, professionally-oriented flight training," he said.
