Summer school has been the bane of many a child’s existence. However, during their college years, some of these same students jump at the chance to take courses during summer break.

Recently, we visited Professor Lee Torda’s business writing class. There we found a bunch of motivated students making the most of their “downtime.” (Video shot and edited by student Nicholas Allende, University News)

Scholars at Work

CARS, the Center for the Advancement of Research and Scholarship, held its 18th annual, two-day program showcasing and celebrating faculty and librarian research, creative endeavors and other modes of scholarship.

“Scholars without Borders” was the theme of the 2014 program, and more than 100 faculty, along with librarians and administrators, participated as lecturers, panel members or moderators for the 50-plus sessions, which were held in the Moakley Center and Hart Hall.

Time Honored

Fifteen members of the BSU community who retired this year were honored at the annual appreciation luncheon. On hand in the Dunn Conference Center to celebrate their years of service to the institution was an audience of more than 100, including several dozen retired faculty and staff members.

The Future is Now

Futuristic products like the “zipperless zipper” and a mini generator were some of the best ideas presented by area middle school students this week at the annual Invention Convention.

Writer’s Retreat

Bruce Machart, associate professor of English, spent the month of May as the writer-in-residence for the Aspen Writers’ Foundation. The program brings selected writers to Woody Creek for a month-long stay at the Catto family ranch.

According to an article in the Aspen Times, Professor Machart arrived with 150 pages of his next novel, tentatively titled, Until Daylight Delivers Me, and hoped to add another 100 while in Colorado.

BSU, Belize and the Future

Though many people in the United States think of Belize as a vacation destination, the picture isn’t so rosy for many of its citizens. For starters, the impoverished country has serious issues in its schools: according to studies, 50 percent of boys and 30 percent of girls will drop out by 8th grade.

Home away from Home

Collin Estrada has fond memories of his time at Bridgewater State University. He uses the same word again and again to describe his memories about his time on campus.

“Let's put it like this: L-O-V-E. Love,” says Mr. Estrada, who referred to Dr. Lisa Battaglino, now dean of Education, as his “United States mother.”

A Little Bit Extra

When 8-year-old Maia moves around St. John’s Anglican Primary School in Belize City, there is not much space for her wheelchair. More often than not, because of the school’s poor flooring, stairways or other obstacles, it’s easier for her to get on her hands and knees and crawl. 

Maia has spina bifida, a debilitating spinal birth defect that prevents her from walking.

D.C. Days

John MacLellan, ’88, traveled to Washington earlier this month where President Obama presented him and 24 of his fellow police officers the “Top Cop Award” for their bravery and dedication. He was also named an Officer of the Month by the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund. The Watertown police sergeant was involved in the shootout with the alleged suspects three nights after the Boston Marathon bombing.
