Community Service: Karaoke Style

One Park Ave
Rondileau Campus Center  004
9:00am-1:00pm

Music inspires all of us in so many ways, but does it inspire you to get up and do something?  Does it inspire you to clean up our rivers and streams?  Or to become a mentor to a young child?  Or find a way to end world poverty?  Is there a song that "speaks" to you about a particular cause?  OrÂ…would you rather write your own song for your own cause?

"Community Service - Karaoke Style" will take you on a musical journey of songs for social justice and social change from the 60s to modern day.  We will use music and lyrics to inspire you to stand up for what you believe in and to motivate you to volunteer on your college campus as well as in your local, national and global community.

At this institute, we will discuss the importance of volunteering and using your voice as a mechanism for change.   As a community, you will learn how to work together to support a cause or address concerns in your community - be it on campus or globally.  You will learn how to effectively articulate your thoughts and ideas through creative means.   You will learn about resources in the Community Service Center that will help support the causes that interest you.

And yes, at the end of this institute, you will sing your own song for a cause

It will also provide you with a chance to meet other first year students, discuss your expectations and questions, and gain more information about the challenges and opportunities you will have as you transition from high school to college. This institute, co-facilitator by a student affairs professional and a faculty member with experience teaching first year students, is the perfect way to begin your year before the flurry of the semester begins!
