A statewide priority for Massachusetts homeland security efforts is the development of a database that will enable the effective deployment of tools and personnel during serious incidents. Some examples of recent catastrophic occurrences in our state include the ice storms in Central Massachusetts that paralyzed much of the area in December 2008.
The Bridgewater State University Institute for Regional Development (IRD), in partnership with the Southeastern Regional Homeland Security Advisory Council (SRAC) and the Southeastern Regional Planning and Economic Development is inventorying public safety resources in Southeast Massachusetts. Bridgewater State University's Institute for Regional Development is implementing and overseeing the utilization of the web based Resource Tracking System here in the Southeast Region.
The IRD, part of the Office for Regional Outreach, has been interacting with fire, public works and police personnel in nearly 100 cities and towns throughout southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod. A major part of the data collecting effort will wrap up in 2009. We thank our partners in the first responder disciplines for helping us to acquire this important information.
