Philosophy Major

B.A. in Philosophy

A minimum of ten philosophy courses (30 credits) is required.  A grade of “C” or higher is required in all philosophy course work contributing to the major.

  • PHIL 111 Foundations of Logical Reasoning (required of all freshmen regardless of major)
  • PHIL 310 Symbolic Logic
  • At least two of the following courses in the history of philosophy is required:
    PHIL 301 Plato and Aristotle
    PHIL 302 Medieval Philosophy
    PHIL 303 Major Modern Philosophers
    PHIL 304 19th Century Philosophy
  • Six other three-credit philosophy courses, including at least four above the 200 level, of which:
        >two must be from among PHIL 402, 403, 404, 405
        >Capstone course - PHIL 450 Senior Seminar

Minor in Philosophy:

For a minor in philosophy, a student must complete six philosophy courses (18 credits). Interested students should contact the chairperson in order to discuss an individual program relevant to their academic majors.

Applied Ethics Concentration:

Fulfill requirements for philosophy major with the following distribution:

At least four of the following:
PHIL 203 Happiness and the Meaning of Life
PHIL 204 Sex and Personal Relations
PHIL 205 Medical Ethics
PHIL 210 Liberation Ethics
PHIL 235 Human Rights and Human Liberties
PHIL 322 Philosophy of Law
PHIL 330 Amoralism, Egoism, and Altruism
