Philosophy Major

B.A. in Philosophy

A minimum of ten philosophy courses (30 credits) is required.  A grade of “C” or higher is required in all philosophy course work contributing to the major.

•PHIL111 Foundations of Logical Reasoning
•History of Philosophy: must complete at least two of the following:
    PHIL301 Plato and Aristotle
    PHIL302 Medieval Philosophy
    PHIL303 Major Modern Philosophers
    PHIL304 19th Century Philosophy
•PHIL 310 Symbolic Logic
•Area Seminars:  must complete at least two of the following:
    PHIL402 Knowledge and Truth
    PHIL403 Ethics and Action
    PHIL404 Mind and Language
    PHIL405 Metaphysics
•At least three additional 3-credit courses in Philosophy
•Capstone Course: PHIL450 Senior Seminar in Philosophy

    

Majors should retain all graded papers and essay exams for their portfolios.
Majors must complete the following during the second of their history-of-philosophy classes:

Minor in Philosophy:

For a minor in philosophy, a student must complete six philosophy courses (18 credits). Interested students should contact the chairperson in order to discuss an individual program relevant to their academic majors.

Applied Ethics Concentration:

Fulfill requirements for philosophy major with the following distribution:

At least four of the following:
PHIL 203 Happiness and the Meaning of Life
PHIL 204 Sex and Personal Relations
PHIL 205 Medical Ethics
PHIL 210 Liberation Ethics
PHIL 235 Human Rights and Human Liberties
PHIL 322 Philosophy of Law
PHIL 330 Amoralism, Egoism, and Altruism
