REFUND of PURCHASES INFORMATION: Due to the cancelation of the NES APS spring meeting April 19th and 20th 2013 Bridgewater State University, full refunds in the amount the original order have been made for all registrations. These refunds should be completed by the end of the day today, Monday April 22, 2013. Please Note that you should expect to receive an e-mail confirmation of the refund to your credit card as well.

Biophysics and Optics

The Bridgewater State University Department of Physics is proud to host this spring's NES/APS and pleased to present a 'Biophysics and Optics' theme all to be showcased in our recently opened Bartlett College of Sciences and Mathematics Complex. Plenary talks, a poster session and BSU building and lab tours followed by a banquet will be held on Friday evening, featuring an after-dinner talk by Harvard's David Weitz on "The Physics of Cooking". Night owls can enjoy a viewing session held by BSU physics students at the BSU Observatory (subject to favorable weather conditions). Saturday concludes with plenary talks, contributed/parallel sessions and vendor displays.

The plenary sessions will focus on Biophysics, in particular optical and nano techniques used in cutting-edge biology and chemistry research, as well as Optics; Optics in Industry and in the Advanced labs.

Registration: Standard, student and Emeritus for conference and banquet (including banquet guests) can also be found using links to the left. Students seeking reimbursement: Hold on to all receipts and submit request after the meeting. Please note that only students who are actually presenters will receive reimbursement up to $150 for expenses incurred in attending the meeting, e.g. registration fee, banquet, abstract fee, travel expenses. Those who are co-authors but not actual presenters will not receive reimbursement. Bridgewater State University physics students may be able to provide free overnight accommodations in their dorms to a limited number of visiting students. Interested students should inquire with Prof. Deveney at edeveney@bridgew.edu.

The deadline to register for the conference is Friday, April 5, for attendees who plan to attend the dinner banquet.

Abstracts and Contributed Papers: We are currently soliciting contributions for oral and poster presentations for the meeting and we encourage students (undergrad and graduate), faculty and representatives from physics-related industry to contribute. We are particularly interested in the following subjects for Saturday morning breakout sessions:

  • Biophysics
  • Optics in Industry
  • Optics in BUFY (Beyond First Year Laboratories)
  • Calculus and non-calculus 1st Year teaching and laboratory instruction
  • Vendor Displays

Please use the link on the left to submit abstracts through APS. The deadline for abstract submissions is March 29th, 2013.

Lodging Information: Blocks of 15 rooms have been reserved at each of the following locations:

  • Fairfield Inn by Marriot (Middleboro, $86 plus tax includes breakfast - Reservations by guests must be received on or before March 27, 2013)
  • Courtyard Marriot (Raynham, $115 plus tax, no breakfast - reservations by guests must be received on or before March 15, 2013)
  • Hampton Inn (Raynham, $99 plus tax, includes breakfast - call-in's must be reserved at hotel no later than Friday March 22, 2013).
