Earlier this morning, a Bridgewater State University resident student reported to the BSU Police Department that, while outside of a Burrill Avenue residence, an unknown man had stabbed him with a knife in the upper chest. The incident reportedly occurred after a brief initial altercation between the two men. The injured student has been transported to the hospital by ambulance for treatment of his injuries. The assailant is described only as a tall, white man.
Because the incident occurred at a privately owned, off-campus residence within the town of Bridgewater, the investigation is being handled by the Bridgewater Police Department. The investigation into this incident is active and ongoing.
Earlier tonight, a DiNardo Hall resident called the BSU Police to report that a suspicious-looking older man had been seen wandering around in the building. BSUPD officers responded and learned that the man had briefly entered a female students room. When the man saw the student he immediately left the room. Officers found the man, who is not a student, in the building and arrested him for breaking and entering and trespassing. He is currently being held in police custody.
It was later determined by the police that the suspect had managed to get into DiNardo Hall by waiting for some students to enter. They held open the exterior door to the building, and, consequently, the suspect was able to follow the students in. The suspect was able to enter the students room because her door had been left unlocked.
In view of this incident, all resident students are urged to take the following basic steps, which will help to ensure their own personal safety while on campus:
Most importantly, always take care to lock your residence hall room door any time you leave the room, and even when you are in your room.
Do not hold open residence hall doors for strangers.
Immediately report all suspicious people or any suspicious activity to the BSU Police Department at 508-531-1212 from a cellular telephone, or 911 from any campus telephone.
Persons with information or questions regarding this incident are requested to contact the office of the chief of police at 508-531-6140.
