First Year Residential Experience (FYRE)

About FYRE

The First Year Residential Experience is designed to help first year students navigate through their transition from high school to college. Students that get involved with these free programs are guided down the road to success and are introduced to the many opportunities that surround them within the BSU community.

Our program features three exciting ways to meet first year students' needs:

  • We offer one educational program each week in every first year building that targets the needs of first year students over the course of the first six weeks of school. That’s a total of three programs per week!
  • We feature two large-scale social/educational events each semester that are created with the intention of bringing the first year student community together.
  • At the conclusion of first semester we will be recruiting applicants for our exclusive Leaders Emerging And Development Series (LEADS).  This six-week workshop is geared towards helping emerging student leaders reach their full leadership potential as they build toward their Sophomore year.
The intent of our program is to address various topics from getting along with your roommate to the services available in the Academic Achievement Center. The program allows students to obtain pertinent information that will help them become more familiar with the campus.

It is our goal to help the first year students feel like they are making a seamless transition from high school to college and adjusting well. It is our hope that first year students learn about themselves and others through this process and that they learn the resources available to them to make their first year and beyond a successful one.

The FYRE Leaders Emerging And Development Series (LEADS) is designed to meet the needs of aspiring first-year student leaders. Through interactive seminars participants will develop skills and abilities to aid in obtaining a leadership position here at BSU. Additionally, the facilitators will assist participants in identifying what leadership opportunities are available to them and the steps to take to acquire those positions. Each participant is paired up with a mentor and will work with a group of their peers to design and implement a social change project.  LEADS is a great opportunity for any first year resident student to build on their leadership skills and learn a little something about themselves.
