Welcome to Bridgewater – a leading public university and innovative pioneer in the field of education.

Founded in 1840 by Horace Mann, Daniel Webster and John Quincy Adams, Bridgewater State University is one of the oldest public institutions of higher education in the United States and is the premiere state university of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Today, Bridgewater is a dynamic, vibrant community of students and scholars, with excellent facilities, an idyllic campus, an outstanding range of academic programs and a broad array of undergraduate learning experiences.

Our trajectory of excellence is fostered by rigorous interactions between faculty and students; a commitment to diversity and global awareness; a heightened sense of civic responsibility and public service; and the deployment of new technologies in all forms of teaching and learning.

As the most comprehensive public institution in Southeastern Massachusetts – one of the fastest-growing regions in New England – Bridgewater is home to nearly 12,000 students and 316 faculty members, making it the eighth largest institution of higher education, public or private, anywhere in the commonwealth. Despite its size, Bridgewater thoughtfully cultivates a small college atmosphere, with classes no larger than 50 students and most with 20 or fewer.

The university houses five distinct colleges: the College of Humanities & Social Sciences, the College of Education & Allied Studies, the Ricciardi College of Business, the Bartlett College of Science & Mathematics, and the College of Graduate Studies. Forward thinking and vast energy have allowed Bridgewater to invest nearly $300 million in an unparalleled program of construction, renovation and renewal over the past decade, including the recent opening of a $98.7 million science and mathematics complex.

Bridgewater is a leader in the adoption of technology for instruction and administration. Through its extensive information technology resources, the university makes technology an integral component of teaching and learning. In addition to enjoying a fully wireless campus with high speed voice, video and data networks, our students and faculty benefit from having cutting-edge educational technology in all classrooms and from extensive computer support services.
