Roles & Responsibilities - The Top 5
Understanding the roles and responsibilities of the Principal Investigator (PI) and the OGSP is essential to a smooth process when developing a proposal. Below is a list of the top five (5) things that clarifies "who is responsible for what" during the proposal development phase.
Roles & Responsibilities of the Principal Investigator (PI)
Generally speaking, the PI should contact the OGSP when considering submitting a proposal for external funding. The PI assumes overall responsibility for developing the proposal and for ensuring it's ready for internal review 2 weeks prior to the due date. Basic responsibilities include:
1. Securing Approval from Chair and Dean
2. Working with the OGSP to Manage the Development of the Proposal
3. Communicating with Collaborators
4. Obtaining IRB Approval (if necessary)
5. Presenting Your Proposal to the OGSP 2 Weeks before the Due Date (for internal routing)
Roles & Responsibilities of the OGSP Pre-Award Office
During proposal development, the OGSP works collaboratively with PIs to help ensure proposals comply with: 1.) funder requirements, 2.) BSU guidelines, and 3.) federal, state, and local regulations. Basic responsibilities include:
1. Reviewing Proposals for Compliance
2. Managing the Routing Process for Institutional Approval
3. Assisting with Proposal Preparation Effort (e.g., budgets, budget justifications)
4. Ensuring Other Documents (Letters of Support, Scope of Work, MoUs) are in Place
5. Submitting Proposals (pending institutional approval)
