This course examines the characteristics of the Chinese culture and the
structure of Chinese society. It pays particular attention to China's economic
reform and its social and political consequences. Topics include Confucianism,
martial arts, a free market within a communist regime, China's political future,
changing Sino-US. relations, and growing prosperity and inequality in China. We
will visit five major cities: Beijing, Xian, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Shangai.
Visits to Beijing and Xian in north China will explore famous trips to
government and private institutions in Beijing and Xian in north China will
explore famous historical sites such as the Great Wall and the Tombs of the
Terra-Cotta Soldiers. Field trips to government and private institutions in
Beijing will provide a glimpse of economic, social and educational reforms in
China. In addition, visits to the east coast of China will explore the scenic
landscape of the West Lake in Suzhou, Hangzhou, and the rapid modernization of
Shangai as China's as China's economic and culture center.
All students are required to attend two pre-departure orientation sessions at BSC for lectures, films, and reading of course materials in preparation for travel. this course is taught in English.

Fang Deng holds a PhD in sociology from the University of
Chicago. She had studied at Beijing University and worked at the Chinese Academy
of Social Sciences in China before she came to the United Studies. Her research
interests are comparative sociology and social research methodology.

This is a 3 credit undergraduate or graduate course in
sociology.
Students in all majors and classes are encouraged to participate.
Noncredit participants are welcome.
