Art History Study Tour to Turkey

May 31 -  June 16, 2005

The art and architecture of the Hittite, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, Ottoman and modern Turkey will be studied firsthand in cities, archeological sites and museums of the country. The tour will begin in Ankara at the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and the Citadel. You will explore Cappadocia spending the day visiting its volcanic area and monastic cave churches.

Visit Kayseri, whose civilization dates back to the 4th millennium BC with the oldest remains at Kultepe, 20 miles from the city. Time will be spent at the 12th century Seljuk mosques. Study the grotto of St. Pier, which was the first grotto in Asia Minor and then tour the Mosaic Museum and the Oriental Bazaar in Antakya. You will then precede to the Cennet and the Cehennem (Heaven and Hell) Pit Caves, formed by various geological movements and corrosion of underground waters. Descent down the pit is possible via a stair track from the Roman period.

Traverse down the coastal road in Anamur to Silifke and see breathtaking views of the Mediterranean. Finally embark on a ferry cruise along the Bosphorus Channel to observe the old waterfront wooden houses, chalets, mansions, imperial palaces and modern villas on the Asian and European shores.
 

Highlights of the study tour will include::

  • Visit the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, Ethnographical Museum, the Mausoleum of Ataturk and the Citadel.

  • Explore Cappadocia which has unique volcanoes and is the center of monastic cave churches in Central Anatolia.

  • Witness a pottery demonstration in Avanos.

  • Visit the Cennet and Cehennem (Heaven and Hell) Pit Caves.

  • Tour the 12th century, Seljuk mosques in Kayseri.

  • Visit the Acropois, Topkapi Palace, Kariye Museum, and the Mosque of Fatih Mehmet II, the conqueror of Istanbul.

  • Embark on a ferry cruise on the Bosphorus Channel separating two continents, Asia and Europe.

  • Visit the biblical city of Hierapolis, the site of Philip the Evangelist's martyrdom.

Dr. Beatrice St. Laurent holds a PhD in Islamic Art and Architecture from Harvard University. She lived in Turkey while writing her doctoral thesis on the city of Bursa and spend five years living in East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Jordan.  She resided in Morocco for three summers in the late 1980's till the early 1990's doing research on a collection of historic glass negatives in Tangier and has attended several professional conferences in Morocco. She led a tour of the Mediterranean for Harvard University in 1989 that included Morocco and led a BSC study tour in March 2003 to Southern Spain and Morocco.  During the summer of 2004 she spent three months in Tangier digitizing the glass negative collection.  She has 30 years of experience working in the Middle East and North Africa.

This is a 3 credit undergraduate or graduate course in sociology.
Students in all majors and classes are encouraged to participate.
Noncredit participants are welcome.
