Master of Arts in English

Expand your Knowledge. Refine your Skills.

C. S. Lewis, novelist, academic, essayist and literary critic, once wrote, “Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it. It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires and … it irrigates the deserts that our lives have already become.”

Perhaps you have a passion for great literature … or are drawn to the power of imagination and words … or find inspiration in the infinite possibilities of creativity and writing. If so, the Master of Arts (MA) in English program at Bridgewater State University can help you explore your appreciation of literature and guide you towards sharing it with others.

Designed to deepen your knowledge of English and American literature, this advanced degree program aims to broaden your perspective through multicultural literary works and enhance your understanding of the role language plays in thought, values and self-development. As a student of the program, you will also learn to hone your analytical, writing and editing skills. Whether you are pursuing a career as an elementary or secondary education teacher, journeying towards a PhD, or simply satisfying scholarly interests, this stimulating program can provide the foundation to strengthen and expand your personal and professional qualifications.

A concentration in creative writing provides intensive study of the art and craft of original writing, and is appropriate for students interested in pursuing careers in editing or journalism, or as professional writers.

  • Full- and part-time program options
  • Small classes facilitating a more personalized learning experience
  • Affordable tuition, whether you live in state or out of state

The Curriculum

The MA in English is a 33-credit program designed to familiarize students with essential forms of literary theory and criticism, as well as with the basic principles and practices of literary research. The curriculum includes core courses covering various literary periods and genres, culturally diverse literature, literary theory and writing. All students of the program participate in Introduction to Graduate Study in English, which examines the backgrounds and techniques of literary scholarship.

In addition to the general curriculum, the MA in English offers a concentration in creative writing. This program provides intensive study of the art and craft of original writing, and is appropriate for students interested in pursuing careers in editing or journalism, or as professional writers.

Students within both concentrations may choose either a thesis option, which allows for focused research within an area of particular interest, or a non-thesis option, which requires expanded course work and the development of two seminar papers.

The Writing Studio at Bridgewater State University offers access to friendly peer consultants who can provide ideas and helpful feedback to student writers working at all levels of the writing process.

“Bridgewater worked very well for me. Evening classes allowed me to make it on time after working a day job in Boston. The pacing was perfect … I got to know my professors and their expectations, and they got to know me very well as a student … Bridgewater completely changed the trajectory of my life.”
