Subject: COVID-19 Update: Mandatory testing for All residential students this week

A message from Dr. Chris Frazer, Executive Director of Wellness

Dear campus community,

Following up on the communication I shared last Thursday, BSU conducted 149 additional COVID-19 tests from Thursday to Saturday, October 22-24. Of those tests, we had eight additional students test positive. Five of those students were already quarantined  based on our contact tracing procedures. These positive cases mainly come from two small clusters, the one we reported last week, and an additional small cluster of friends who were in frequent and close contact with each other. BSU has 38 students in two-week quarantine (15 on campus, 23 off campus) and 16 in isolation (12 on campus, 4 off campus).

BSU’s priority has and continues to be the health and safety of our campus community. While we believe we have largely isolated and quarantined these two small clusters, we are going to test every resident student each week for the next two weeks, beginning tomorrow. This decision is being made out of an abundance of caution and is prompted by the rise of COVID-19 cases across Massachusetts and the United States. Testing will continue on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and we have doubled our capacity to manage the additional testing required for every resident student. If you have NOT already signed up for your test, please sign up for testing here  .

A few cautionary notes regarding close contacts and contact tracing. In both small clusters, our contact tracing has revealed that students in these groups are generating a number of “close contacts” far greater than we expected given the requirements of our Bear Paw Pact. We strongly urge all students to limit your close contacts  to only the people you NEED to interact with.

On the matter of contact tracing, it is imperative that everyone who is contacted be forthright about who they have come in contact with and how and where they came in contact with those individuals. Your actions affect the safety and health of your friends, family and others in our community. If you have any questions, please contact us at

(BSU will update the dashboard on Thursday, Oct. 29.)
