The Master of Arts in Teaching degree in English (MAT) was developed for high school and middle school English teachers who seek professional licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. With coursework in the Departments of Education and English, the MAT program provides a balanced emphasis on building advanced teaching skills and deeper content knowledge within the discipline of English studies. Applicants to the MAT program must already have initial licensure to teach in the state.
If you seek initial licensure, the BSU Education department offers an Accelerated Post Baccalaureate program (APB). Another master’s degree option that satisfies the requirement for professional teaching licensure is the MA in English; consult the Graduate Program Coordinator for more information about whether the MAT or MA in English would be the right choice for you.
The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree in English provides an inspiring learning environment with opportunities to work side-by-side with peers, experienced classroom teachers and dedicated faculty in a collegial and supportive atmosphere. Integrating theory and practice, the program provides a balanced emphasis on building advanced teaching skills and deeper content knowledge within English Studies. This advanced degree will enhance your understanding of the roles that language, literature, and writing play in societies and individual lives. Graduate students in the MAT take 6 courses in English and 5 in Education. Advising will be done by full-time members of the graduate faculty in the Department of English.
The MAT in English program offers:

• Small classes of 7-15 students, for a more personalized learning experience
• Face-to-face evening and Saturday classes, some online and partially online sections

Total Minimum Credits: 33
- Online application and $50 application fee
- Transcripts - Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work
- Minimum GPA - Minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 based upon four years of coursework or 3.0 GPA based upon work completed during the junior and senior years
- Letters of Recommendation - Three appropriate letters of recommendation. At least two recommenders should be professors; another could be a school administrator or supervisor.
- Personal Statement - A 400-500 word statement of purpose, including reasons for undertaking the degree, relevant experience and aptitude, and academic topics of interest in the field.
- Initial teaching License - An initial teaching license

Applications will be accepted and reviewed after these dates but must be complete within four to six weeks prior to the start of the semester.

English Courses (18 credits)
Electives in Literary Study (6 credits): Topics courses in American, British, or World Literature
Elective in Composition/Rhetoric, Creative Writing or TESOL (3 credits)
Elective in Ethnic or Culturally Diverse Literature, Writing, or Film (3 credits)
(recent topics have included African American satire, Native American Writing and Rhetoric, and Irish Film)
Elective in English Education (3 credits): Literature or Composition Pedagogy
Total minimum credits: 33
