In this presentation, we will take a closer look at Alzheimer's disease (AD), which is the number one cause of dementia with Dr. Sandy Neargarder, pschology professor here at BSU. We'll start by defining dementia and introducing the various causes of this behavioral condition. We'll then examine what happens inside of the brain of someone who has AD. We'll then talk about the symptoms associated with AD and will review a research project I published that examined how deficits in the ability to see contrast can affect everyday behaviors like eating and drinking. We'll then talk about various environmental interventions aimed at helping individuals with AD to function independently, and finally we'll discuss what each of us can do to minimize our risks of getting AD as we age.
