Urban Education, Graduate Certificate
The Urban Education Graduate Certificate from Bridgewater State University provides students with skills and knowledge to act as agents of change in large urban school districts, as well as in smaller urban centers that share many social and economic characteristics of large urban districts and benefit from the similar approaches. The coursework will provide background about the systemic social, cultural, racial, economic and political factors that influence urban areas as well as practical methods for working with diverse students enrolled in districts in those areas.
This graduate certificate program is an interdisciplinary program designed to prepare teachers to work in urban education contexts. This is to include not just large districts, such as Boston, but also smaller districts in southeast Massachusetts (such as Taunton, New Bedford, and Brockton) and across the nation which can be classified as urban emerging or as having urban characteristics. The courses in this program will explore systemic and local factors affecting teaching and learning in urban schools, as well as engage students in applying practical pedagogical skills for working with diverse populations. As many schools change and become more diverse, all teachers could potentially benefit from coursework that addresses urban contexts.

A bachelors degree is required for admission to all graduate certificate programs.
1. All applicants to graduate certificate programs will complete the standard graduate school application forms.
2. In addition to a completed application, every applicant should submit the following:
- An official college transcript of the completed baccalaureate degree with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.8
- An official college transcript of graduate course work (if applicable)
- A short essay on the value of the graduate certificate program for the applicant
- One appropriate letter of recommendation from an academic or professional

EDMC 504: Teaching and Learning in Urban Contexts

TESL 509: Supporting English Language Learners in Urban Schools
