Civil Air Patrol (CAP) has approved a charter for its newest Senior Squadron at Bridgewater State University. The CAP BSU Squadron will be registered as MA-005, and is the only college-affiliated CAP squadron in New England.

CAP was founded in 1941 as the volunteer civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force, and its squadrons represent and serve their home community, state, region, and the nation through three primary missions: emergency services, aerospace education, and cadet programs.

BSU Senior Squadron members will provide leadership and personal development training, educational outreach and support services, and aviation personnel and equipment assets to support search and rescue and disaster relief efforts.

Dr. Robert McManus, associate professor in the College of Graduate Studies and program coordinator with BSU's Office of External Affairs, and a 28-year veteran with CAP, will serve as the commanding officer, with Loren Herren, chief instructor with BSU Aviation, serving as deputy commander.
