The Master of Education (MEd) in Reading program is built on a 50-year legacy of augmenting the professional development and intellectual growth of practicing educators. The program can prepare you for new roles in education through a challenging, 30-credit-hour curriculum designed to bridge theory and practice, foster values of diversity, and advance professionalism and ethical behavior. Focusing on literacy development, assessment, and instruction of students with diverse learning and literacy needs, the program includes course work in areas such as Improving Literacy Instruction, Literacy Assessment Principles and Techniques, Research in Literacy Teaching and Learning, and Literacy Curriculum Development and Implementation.
The College of Graduate Studies also offers a Master of Education (MEd) in Reading, Language, Literacy and Culture concentration, designed for experienced educators with an initial license to enhance and expand their skills in language, literacy and culture across diverse populations as a classroom teacher.

- Transcripts - Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work
- Minimum GPA - Minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 2.8 based upon four years of course work or a 3.0 based on the last 60 credits
- *GRE Scores - A minimum combined score of 340 (170 for each of the quantitative and verbal parts of the GRE) for clear admit and 320 (160 for each of the quantitative and verbal parts of the GRE) for conditional admit (GRE can be waived with passing results of required MTELs)
- Personal Statement - Prepare a brief, but careful statement regarding the reasons you want to pursue graduate work in this field, your specific interest and experiences in this field, and your career goals
- Letters of Recommendation - A rating of 1 ("Highly Recommended") on three letters of recommendation (at least one from a teaching supervisor and one from someone who has knowledge of the applicant's aptitude for advanced scholarship)
- Possession of a Massachusetts State Department of Elementary and Secondary Education active license OR a qualifying score on the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) Communication and Literacy Skills (01)
- One year teaching experience in area of licensure
- Foundational knowledge in computer technology (Microsoft Word and Office)
*Applicants are eligible for the GRE waiver if they are a current BSU undergraduate senior or recent BSU alumni (five years or fewer) and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. If both of these criteria are met, the GRE requirement will be waived as an admissions requirement for the individual.
