In high school, Escarolyn Garcia's plan was to attend a university with a strong sense of community. After discovering Bridgewater State University through her involvement with La Sociedad Latina (a Roxbury-based organization that cultivates leaders among Latina youth), her college decision-making process became that much clearer. Our welcoming and caring community reminded her of "being home" and her initial fears of fitting in on campus quickly dissolved.
"I immersed myself in the BSU version of La Sociedad Latina, and became one of it’s leaders my freshmen year," she says. "Additionally, I became an Orientation Leader, which allowed me to come out of my shell and develop the self-confidence that I could achieve anything I want to do in life."
Bridgewater has provided Escarolyn with unmatched experiences for personal growth. One of her favorite memories has been making a difference in new students lives, both as an Orientation Leader and Convocation Speaker for the Class of 2017. As an empowered Latina student, she prides herself on stepping outside of her comfort zone and letting her voice be heard.
