A BSE tailored to your goals

Choose the Bachelor of Elementary Education program that’s right for you. If you choose the Special Education Concentration, you may also apply for early acceptance into the MEd in special education program for your initial license as a teacher of students with moderate disabilities in grades PreK–8.

We’ve prepared educators and future educators at BSU for 180 years. Our Bachelor of Science in elementary education is one of the oldest programs of its kind in Massachusetts. It’s also approved through the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, so you know it will give you the credentials you need.

Small class sizes, big benefits

At BSU, you’ll take courses for your undergraduate elementary education degree with about 20 other students. This intimate learning environment allows your instructors to get to know you, offer constructive feedback on your teaching and allow you to collaborate with your classmates.

Flexibility to learn on your schedule

BSU’s College of Continuing Studies gives you maximum flexibility to complete your degree. The bachelor’s degree in elementary education program may be taken on Bridgewater’s main campus during the day, or you may pursue your degree at night or online. Our night and online programs follow the same requirements and curriculum as our day program, and many of our faculty members teach on campus as well as at night and online.

Awards and special programs

As you earn your bachelor’s degree in elementary education at BSU, you may apply to join our STEM-EL Program that helps you develop skills to teach STEM-related subjects in multicultural environments. This program is free for accepted students through a National Science Foundation grant. You may also apply for the TEACH Grant, which is awarded to a student who will serve at least four years as a full-time teacher in a high-need subject area at a low-income school.

Program of Study for Elementary Education Majors

At BSU, our Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education programs offer you research-based pedagogy and strategies for encouraging the social and emotional development of children.

Choose from:

  • Elementary Education, BSE, which will prepare you for initial Massachusetts licensure in elementary education (grades 1–6)
  • Elementary Education, Special Education Concentration, BSE, which gives you an in-depth understanding of special education and the elementary school classroom. You may also apply for early acceptance into the MEd in special education program for your initial license as a teacher of students with moderate disabilities in grades PreK–8.

Careers in Elementary Education

The need for skilled educators in elementary schools is expected to grow, with an estimated 124,300 job openings each year through 2030, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. So, if you’ve been thinking about becoming a teacher, now is a great time to start your journey to earning your undergraduate elementary education degree and obtain your initial licensure.

Your Bachelor of Science in elementary education from BSU will help you gain the skills and knowledge you need to teach children in grades 1–6.

The majority of BSU alumni with a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education teach in public schools. Once you complete your undergraduate elementary education degree, however, you may choose to teach in private or parochial schools, community programs, tutoring organizations or other institutions.
