Action: Racial Justice and Equity

It Takes a Campus

Congratulations members of the Bridgewater State University community. Thanks to the inclusion of compelling voices of six student leaders, the March issue of ACTION was by far our most popular to date. Clearly, you recognized the importance of hearing directly from those on campus and beyond most impacted by our collective work on behalf of racial justice and equity.

These are the same voices we should anticipate hearing from if our efforts fall short of what we – and they – expect from BSU, its people and its culture.

This issue is also special. It features a wide-ranging interview with Dr. Jean MacCormack, Chair of the BSU Board of Trustees. We have also collected stories that speak to how the university continues to prioritize the implementation of the recommendations of the Special Presidential Task Force on Racial Justice (2021).

It takes a campus. This wide representation of voices from across campus speaks to the great number of faculty, librarians, staff, administrators and students working to advance racial equity and justice.

Thank you for reading ACTION. I hope you will find the issue as inspiring as I did.

On a personal note, this will be the final issue of ACTION I will have the honor of publishing. I will soon be moving on to serve as the seventh president of Eastern Connecticut State University. It has been one of the most meaningful professional experiences of my career to work with all of you to advance the cause of racial justice and equity at BSU.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the amazing ACTION team for their dedication to this effort: Karen Callan, John Winters, Jaime Knight, Eileen O’Sullivan, and Paul Jean. I will miss working with you.

Thank you!

Karim Ismaili, PhD Executive Vice President and Provost
