The Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Certificate Program is designed to provide any interested graduate student with the knowledge and competencies to address the social emotional learning challenges of elementary, secondary, and post-secondary students in schools.

The Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Certificate Program is designed to provide any interested graduate student with the knowledge and competencies to address the social emotional learning challenges of elementary, secondary, and post-secondary students in schools. Candidates participate in a four-course sequence designed to provide expertise in five SEL core competencies; teaching practices that model and facilitate SEL development; evidence-based strategies for dealing with trauma and building student resiliency; and completion of a competency portfolio in Social Emotional Learning. The SEL Certificate Program can be taken as an independent certificate program or as an embedded sequence of courses within an existing M.Ed. program.

Rolling admission for Fall, Spring and Summer enrollment.
Applications that are not completed prior to the start of the semester will need to be moved to the next applicable semester

Curriculum

The program of study for the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Certificate Program requires a four-course sequence of required courses (12 credits) as identified below:

SPED 567 Foundations of Social Emotional Learning

SPED 568 Applications of Social Emotional Learning in Schools

SPED 569 Trauma Sensitive Teaching: Practical Strategies for Building Resiliency

SPED 580 Practicum: Social Emotional Learning

To be eligible for SPED 580 Practicum: SEL and the Certificate in SEL, candidates must complete all other SEL courses. Earning the SEL Certificate requires candidates to complete the SPED 580 Practicum in Social Emotional Learning.

 Total minimum credits: 12
