Native Peoples and the Struggle for Land

Have students read about the taking of Native lands by the colonists on p.6 and consider how this was a denial of their rights to lands they have lived on for thousands of years. Next, present students with other key events in this narrative through the centuries such as the Mashpee Revolt of 1833 and the current legal challenges of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe today. Have students evaluate how Native Peoples have had to fight for their rights of land ownership.
