Veterans and military members already know Bridgewater State University is leading the way when it comes to supporting them and their educational goals. Now the news is spreading.

The university was recently recognized nationally by College Factual for its support of veterans. College Factual is a website that collects data and analyzes it to help students discover the school best suited to their needs.

BSU ranked high in three categories: Best Management Sciences and Quantitative Methods Colleges for Veterans, Best Special Education College for Veterans, and Best Teacher Education Subject Specific College for Veterans.

While the recognition is nice, the statistics don’t tell the entire story, said Dr. Michael Siegel, ’98, director of Military and Veteran Student Services, whose office is located in the Veterans Center.

“We always encourage people to come down and see what we really offer. We do try to offer a comprehensive experience,” he said.

According Siegel, the center currently provides support for approximately 350 military-connected BSU students.

“The goal (of the center) is to try and provide a one-stop experience for any potential or current student. We are here to help with the educational process or with educational benefits,” he said.

Siegel retired from the Army in 2014, and with 21 years of service behind him he knows first-hand how confusing the enrollment process can be for veterans and members of the military.

“That’s our job, to connect all those moving pieces and make it a seamless transition into higher education,” he said.

The BSU Veterans Center isn’t just for assisting the military and veteran community in achieving their academic and personal goals. Seigel said.

“We are here to support everybody, it’s never too late to go back to school,” Siegel said.

Located on the bottom floor of Tillinghast Hall (45 School Street), the center is also equipped with computers, and is a place well suited for studying, socializing and general camaraderie.

Various activities and events are also offered by the center throughout the year.
