Building a Global Community: Record Global Engagement Day Celebrates Dr. Edward W. Minnock's Enduring Legacy
Fifth annual celebration of international education draws record participation while honoring the vision that continues to shape Bridgewater State University's global community.

The sounds of world music filled the Rondileau Student Union as students sampled international cuisine, explored study abroad opportunities, and connected with faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners during Bridgewater State University's fifth annual Global Engagement Day. Throughout the afternoon, conversations crossed cultures and continents as attendees discovered new opportunities for global learning and celebrated the many perspectives that enrich the university community.
More than 216 students, faculty, staff, alumni, community members, and guests attended this year's celebration, making Global Engagement Day 2026 the largest in the event's history. Hosted by the Dr. Edward W. Minnock Institute for Global Engagement (MIGE), the annual event reflected Bridgewater State University's continued commitment to preparing students for success in an increasingly interconnected world through international education, cultural exchange, and global partnerships.
Now in its fifth year, Global Engagement Day has evolved from a modest campus gathering into one of Bridgewater State University's signature annual events. The celebration brings together academic departments, campus offices, students, alumni, and community organizations to showcase the many ways global learning enriches the university experience while fostering cross-cultural understanding and meaningful connections.
The day's program featured remarks from university leadership, a keynote presentation, cultural performances, interactive exhibits, networking opportunities, and information highlighting the many ways students can engage in international education both on and off campus.
An important part of the celebration was the opportunity to experience cultures through food. Thanks to partnerships with local restaurants, attendees sampled cuisine from around the world, including Haitian, Thai and Malaysian, Chinese, Greek, and Italian dishes. The international menu was a true cultural exchange as students, faculty, staff, and guests gathered around tables to share stories, traditions, and conversation. Many attendees described the international cuisine as one of the day's highlights, noting how the diverse flavors enhanced the experience and brought the spirit of global engagement to life.
A Growing Global Community
Dr. Jakari Griffith, Interim Provost of International Engagement and Senior International Officer, said the event reflected both the remarkable growth of international education at Bridgewater State and the university's commitment to building meaningful global connections.
"As I look around the room, I notice we're seated in a circle, much like the globe itself. That feels especially fitting for Global Engagement Day because it reminds us that no matter where we come from, we are all connected."
Griffith said the continued expansion of the event mirrors the collaborative efforts of faculty, staff, and students across campus.
"Our students are at the heart of this work, bringing diverse perspectives, curiosity, and a willingness to engage across cultures. Global Engagement Day is a reminder that creating a globally engaged community isn't the work of one office; it's something we build together, every day."
This year's celebration also served as a tribute to the enduring legacy of Dr. Edward W. Minnock, whose decades of leadership helped establish Bridgewater State University as a leader in international education and global engagement. Throughout the event, speakers reflected on Minnock's vision of preparing students to think beyond borders, build meaningful international partnerships, and engage the world with curiosity, compassion, and purpose.
President Frederick W. Clark Jr. echoed that sentiment, reflecting on the lasting impact of Dr. Edward W. Minnock, whose vision helped establish Bridgewater State's commitment to international education and global partnerships.
"Global Engagement Day is more than a celebration of cultures; it is a reflection of who we are as a university and the values that define Bridgewater State."
Clark noted that Minnock recognized early on that the university's future would be strengthened by building relationships that extended far beyond campus.
"Ed understood that Bridgewater State's future would be shaped by its ability to connect with the world through global learning, cultural understanding, and meaningful international partnerships."
He added that Minnock's vision continues to shape the university today.
"Dr. Minnock's legacy lives on through every international partnership we build, every cultural exchange we embrace, and every student whose perspective is broadened through these experiences."
Learning Without Borders
The celebration continued with an exhibition-style showcase highlighting the work of the Dr. Edward W. Minnock Institute for Global Engagement and its units, including Study Abroad, International Student and Scholar Services, and Global Programs, alongside organizations, academic departments, and interdisciplinary programs from across the university.
Participating areas included the Lewis and Gaines Center for Inclusion and Equity, Career Services, African Studies, Asian Studies, Irish Studies, Latin American, Caribbean and Latinx Studies, Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), Global Migration Studies, Middle East and North African Studies, Canadian Studies, Global Religious Studies, the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center (MARC), Language Services, the Journal of International Women's Studies, Anthropology, Interdisciplinary Studies, Social Justice Studies, and numerous additional academic programs.
Together, the exhibits showcased the breadth of Bridgewater State's global initiatives while connecting students with opportunities to study abroad, engage in international research, explore interdisciplinary coursework, and participate in programs designed to prepare them for leadership in an increasingly interconnected world.
Collaboration Across Campus and Beyond
Global Engagement Day also provided students with opportunities to connect directly with community organizations committed to international education, civic engagement, and global citizenship. Community partners, including WorldBoston and Big Brothers Big Sisters, joined the celebration alongside university representatives, creating meaningful opportunities for students to build relationships beyond the classroom.
Throughout the afternoon, attendees visited interactive exhibits, enjoyed international food tastings and world music, participated in raffles and games, and engaged in conversations with faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners about the many pathways to global learning and engagement.
Behind the scenes, months of planning and collaboration across campus helped make the event possible. Support from the Division of Outreach and Engagement, Student Success, Equity and Diversity, Student Life, and the African American Alumni Association helped fund programming, while partnerships with local businesses and community organizations expanded opportunities for student engagement.
Those collaborative efforts generated more than $2,200 in internal sponsorship support and 17 raffle prizes from campus and community partners, including two $500 Study Abroad scholarships, bookstore gift cards, restaurant gift cards, wellness experiences, and other prizes celebrating the value of international education while encouraging student participation.
Empowering Student Leadership
One of the most significant additions to this year's celebration was the inaugural Global Engagement Day Student Ambassador Program.
Student ambassadors welcomed guests, managed registration, guided attendees throughout the event, supported activities and networking opportunities, and helped cultivate the welcoming, inclusive atmosphere that has become a hallmark of Global Engagement Day. Their leadership reflected Bridgewater State University's commitment to empowering students as ambassadors for both their university and the broader global community.
Throughout the event, students explored study abroad opportunities, internationally focused academic programs, and conversations centered on cultural diversity, global citizenship, and cross-cultural collaboration. The event encouraged attendees to broaden their perspectives while strengthening connections with faculty, staff, alumni, and community organizations committed to international learning.
For Korley Korda, an international graduate student from Ghana and one of the inaugural Global Engagement Day Student Ambassadors, the event demonstrated what community looks like when diversity is intentionally celebrated.
"Global Engagement Day showcased how the BSU community pulls together resources to support international students, a reminder that real community requires lived values of mutual respect and appreciation, especially in a world where online division and eroded tradition have broken society's communal spirit."
For Korda, the experience extended beyond the exhibits and programming.
"It was a powerful glimpse of what could be, wrapped in authentic, organic music, great ambiance, and undeniably good food."
Looking Toward the Future
Record attendance reflected growing interest in international education throughout the Bridgewater State community while underscoring the power of collaboration among students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners. Together, they created an event that celebrated diverse perspectives, expanded opportunities for learning, and strengthened connections across campus and beyond.
Senior Advisor for External Relations Vinny DeMacedo said Global Engagement Day serves as a reminder that preparing students for the future begins by embracing the perspectives of people from around the world.
"Global Engagement Day at Bridgewater State University was a powerful reminder that our strength lies in our diversity and our shared responsibility to one another."
He added that global learning strengthens both individuals and communities.
"By thinking globally and embracing the perspectives of our students from all over the world, we not only deepen our understanding of the world we live in, but we grow stronger and more capable as a community. When we broaden our horizons, we don't just learn about the world — we become better versions of ourselves."
As Bridgewater State University continues expanding opportunities for international education and cross-cultural engagement, Global Engagement Day has become more than an annual celebration, it reflects the university's mission to prepare globally minded leaders equipped to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
What began as a campus event has evolved into a university tradition that celebrates curiosity, cultural understanding, and collaboration while inspiring students to see themselves as active participants in a global community. Through partnerships, experiential learning, and meaningful cultural exchange, Global Engagement Day continues to demonstrate that international education is not simply about traveling abroad, it is about expanding perspectives, building relationships, and preparing graduates to lead with empathy, purpose, and a deep appreciation for the world around them.
