Prerequisite: ENGL 203 and ENGL 234; or consent of instructor Students will survey writings in African-American literature form its inception through 1954, the year of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling that outlawed segregation. Studying distinguished writers of poetry, drama, essays, narratives and prose fiction, students will attend to the historical, cultural and political contexts in which the works were produced.
