This course examines the creation of Caribbean cultures and societies over 500 years of European conquest and colonization, the impact of the slave trade, emancipation, independence movements and postcolonial state formation. The course explores everyday life in contemporary Caribbean societies considering the intersections of nationality, class, ethnicity, race, gender and religion on the formation of diverse and complex cultures. Offered annually.
