Prerequisite: SPED 567 or consent of the graduate chairperson in Special Education This course focuses on the process and application of social emotional learning (SEL) implementation in schools. It will examine the integration of SEL teaching practices across all levels of instruction and address how to build culturally responsive curriculum and classrooms. Students will identify and reflect upon professional beliefs and their own teaching practices, with a goal of embedding best practices into class routines, expectations and all content lessons at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Students will differentiate instruction to meet specific SEL needs of students within a tiered framework, evaluate the impact of SEL competencies on student success metrics and create a culturally responsive assessment. Offered fall, spring, summer.
