Prerequisite: Matriculation in EdS in Reading; restricted to cohort members In this first practicum, candidates for the EdS in Reading work with a small group (3-5) of students to develop an instructional intervention plan that incorporates best practices as reflected in research, student literacy data and background information for each student. As part of the practicum and the intervention, candidates will confer with teacher-colleagues to share and discuss student literacy data, observations, and next steps for instruction. During the intervention, candidates will be supervised and will receive feedback on their instruction during the intervention and their collaborations with teacher-colleagues. Candidates will document their assessment plan, intervention plan and communication plan as part of a diagnostic portfolio report that will be shared with teacher-colleagues and families at the end of the intervention. As a conclusion to the candidates’ experiences engaging in the role of a reading specialist, they will reflect on their developing understanding of the role. Offered fall and spring semesters.
