Prerequisite: Admission to the Professional Education Program and SPED 202 or SPED 211; and SPED 304 This course is designed to provide future early childhood special education teachers with a comprehensive understanding of early literacy foundations and their application to special needs learners, specifically within the context of Massachusetts' early literacy initiatives. Students will explore the essential components of phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, and their interconnectedness in supporting reading and writing development. The course will emphasize evidence based practices, effective instructional strategies, and the use of technology to support early literacy development in diverse learners. Through a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical application, students will develop the expertise needed to
effectively teach early literacy skills to special needs children in Massachusetts. Offered fall and spring semester.
