Prerequisite: CHEM 142 and CHEM 243 This is a one-semester course designed for individuals who need biochemistry as a prerequisite to apply for admission to a program in the health professions. The goal of this course is to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of biochemistry with focus on the structure, function and synthesis of biological macromolecules (nucleic acids, lipids, carbohydrates and proteins). The course begins with a brief overview of the relationship between biological macromolecules and genetics. Then, the structure of biological macromolecules will be covered. In addition, this course will cover enzymology including enzyme kinetics, thermodynamics and catalytic mechanisms in metabolic pathways: glycolysis; TCA cycle; pentose phosphate; glycogen metabolism; gluconeogenesis; electron transport; beta oxidation of fatty acids; fatty acid synthesis; amino acid and nucleic acid synthesis. Offered fall, spring, summer.
