Prerequisite: CRJU 101 and CRJU 202; or consent of instructor This interdisciplinary course will explore how females experience crime, justice, and the criminal justice system differently than do males. Through a comparative historical lens, we will explore legal, philosophical, psychological, sociological and political perspectives on crime and justice. This course will use a gendered perspective in examining the roots of violence against women in our society, specifically addressing femicide, intimate partner violence, and sexual assault. We will then examine the difference between women and men as offenders, including theories of offending, agency and types of offenses committed. Particular emphasis will be given to incarceration alternatives, including restorative justice programs.
