Prerequisite: Matriculation in the MEd program in Student Affairs counseling; or consent of instructor This course is designed to acquaint students with the counseling skills, interventions and techniques that are used within a student affairs setting. Through lectures, discussions, role-plays, demonstrations and videotaped vignettes, students will develop the skills and the conceptual frameworks that are necessary for effective counseling with college students. Students will learn basic crisis intervention strategies in order to effectively respond to a variety of mental health-related issues on campus. Students will discuss appropriate referral procedures and ways to foster critical collaborative relationships with institutional and community resources. Professional ethics, legal standards, technology, developmental theories and multicultural competencies will be integrated within the practice of counseling in a student affairs capacity. Offered spring semester.
