Prerequisite: EDLE 504 This course is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of the American legal system so that they can identify the history and sources of law, read and interpret laws and relevant cases, understand how the court systems work, and also understand personal and institutional liability. Emphasis will be placed on local, state, and federal laws likely to be encountered by students, faculty and administrators in the higher education community. The relationship between constitutional law, supreme court cases, employment law and the development of policies that govern higher education will also be reviewed. As higher education is in the midst of global revolution with nations seeking international exchanges and collaboration, there will also be an examination of the implications of policies governed by national and international law in an age of global opportunities and global challenges. Offered annually.
