Prerequisite: SCWK 250 with a minimum grade of "C"; and SCWK 270 with a minimum grade of "C"; and one human biology course from the following: BIOL 100, BIOL 102, BIOL 110, BIOL 117, BIOL 121, BIOL 128 This foundation course introduces the student to the social work perspective on human development and its organizational and social contexts. The course provides a multidimensional framework, addressing the interactions among human biological, social, psychological and cultural systems as they affect and are affected by human behavior. Building on the introduction to the social work profession offered in SCWK 250 and the extensive content on oppression and discrimination in SCWK 270, the course offers a theoretical grounding upon which practice and policy courses will build. As a theory-driven course, this course will introduce students to diverse and sometimes conflicting theories that attempt to explain human functioning. Efforts will be made to understand the contexts in which these theories were developed as well as their strengths and limitations; students will learn to evaluate theories as tools for understanding clients in a multicultural society. Offered fall and spring semesters.
